Students should feel empowered to reach their full potential and become lifelong learners, with the support of the school board and school staff to reach their goals. I want to be a champion for our children and a voice for parents, who are key to unlocking a brighter future for our students and our community.
Our core curriculum has departed from the fundementals of reading, writing, arithmetic, science, history, and physical education. Schools have become muddied with a soup of mandatory classes. These classes are what provide the knowledge our kids will need to succeed in the lives they live after leaving our school system. With our average test scores dropping every year, we should be focusing our attention on these subjects. My goal in this area is 3 fold:
1. To consider the budget and learn what portion is going toward the core curriculum.
2. To review the core curriculum and advocate for subjects that will be integral to our children's success.
3. To seek transparency in curriculum by way of clearly a defined syllabus available to our students and parents for every course.
In my experience and in speaking to parents around the district, it is clear many parents are unaware about what takes place in the classroom and the responsibility of teachers / school vs parents has seemed to become more unclear. It is important to me that the school board work to ensure parents / guardians are informed on the policies, expectations, syllabus, and interactions that take place and teachers can feel confident the parents / guardians will also do their part. My goals in this area are:
Our community contributes tax dollars to the school district and therefore it is important to be transparent about spending. Openly sharing how the board goes into decision making and allocating funds, is just as important as the actual spend and understanding the financial ask of the community. District 196 has earned a certificate in excellence for financial reporting, over the last 16 years – which is great; anyone has access to the district’s planned budget and capital expenses. However, what is not easy to access is a clear breakdown, not the high level audit, of how money is actually spent and whether there is a forum where the public can provide thoughts to the board.
